Smoke on the Mountain takes place in 1938 at Mount
Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. The play presents a
Saturday Night Gospel Sing featuring the Sanders Family in their first night back from the
gospel circuit in five years. The audience plays the part of the congregation.
Pastor Oglethorpe, a young and enthusiastic minister, has enlisted teh Sanders Family in his efforts to bring his congregation into the "modern world". Opening night jitters combined with the disdain of a pair of spinsters, the church's chief benefactors, keep the evening on the verge of chaos. Between songs, the family members share their witness with the congregation.
Smoke on the Mountain is presentational - the event of the play is the Saturday Night Sing itself. It was first produced in 1988, written by Connie Ray, Conceived by Alan Bailey, with Musical Arrangements by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick. Smoke on the Mountain features over 27 gospel hymns, a number of which will be familiar to the audience. The music includes both traditional gospel and Blue Grass.
